Helmet Rebuilds at Heavy Metal Divers

Helmet Rebuilds

Bring a worn bronze helmet back to working condition.

A bronze helmet can be brought back. A fiberglass one usually cannot. That difference is the whole reason we cast the Gladiator shell in silicon bronze.

A rebuild is a complete teardown: the helmet is stripped to the shell, every component is inspected, and everything worn is replaced. Damage to the shell is ground, welded, or brazed as required, then refinished with plating, polishing, or painting, depending on how you want it to look when it goes back to work.

Rebuilt helmets go back out as working helmets, function-tested, documented, and ready for the next dive.

What this covers

  • Full teardown, inspection, and rebuild
  • Hardware, valving, and comms replacement
  • Shell refinishing and plating, polishing, or painting
  • Returned to service ready for working dives

Process

How a rebuild works.

01

Teardown and assessment

The helmet comes fully apart. Shell, sideblock and valving, regulator, hardware, comms, faceplate, and lockup are each assessed separately.

02

Shell preparation

Damage is ground out, welded, or brazed as required, then the shell is prepared for its new finish. This is work a cracked fiberglass shell cannot accept.

03

Component replacement

Hardware, valving, commposts, seals, and worn fittings are replaced with new parts, and the Poseidon Xstream regulator is rebuilt to specification.

04

Finish

Plating, polishing, or painting. This is the stage where a working helmet also becomes a helmet you are proud to wear.

05

Reassembly and test

The helmet is rebuilt, function-tested, and returned with a record of the work carried out.

Common Questions

Helmet Rebuilds: questions we get asked.

Is a rebuild worth it instead of buying new?

Usually, yes, and it is the reason bronze matters. A rebuild costs a fraction of a new helmet and returns the same shell to service. Where the shell is sound, there is no reason to retire it.

Can you rebuild a fiberglass or plastic helmet?

Regulator, valving, comms, and hardware can all be serviced on other makes. The shell is the limit. Fiberglass that has cracked or delaminated generally cannot be brought back to working condition.

What finish should I choose?

Plating, polishing, and painting are the three finishes we offer. Tell us how the helmet is used and we will recommend one.
